Dot Hill retired after 48 years as owner of the Merle Norman franchise in Fayetteville. Katherine Calvin was named to Dean’s List at Vanderbilt University for the fall semester. Sheley Cowey and family were named Lincoln County’s Best Florist for the seventh consecutive year.

GASTONIA FIRST (NC): Megan Pearson has met all the requirements to be a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Progam. Floyd & Gloria Rhyne celebrated 54 years of marriage April 4, and James & Lee Craig celebrated their 62nd year April 15. Josie Barger and Caroline Roberts were winners in the 2012 Mid-Carolina Regional Art Competition. Josie won a silver key for photography and Caroline for painting. The fall UNC-Chapel Hill Dean’s List included Ryan Evans, Carmen McGill, and Meredith Parks. Sam Painter has been accepted into the Google Summer of Code Program for 2012. Wil Craig, Jarrett Schmitt, and Cole Welch recently received their Eagle Scout Award.

LAUDERDALE (VA): Peter Dowling was inducted into the National Honor Society. Arthur & Darlene Hostetter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 21.

LINDEN (NC): Lauren Myers was selected to be a student leader to represent Burns High School and to receive training from The Rachel’s Challenge Group. The group was named for Rachel Scott, the first person killed at the Columbine (CO) high school shooting. Rachel was known for acts of kindness and compassion.

MOUNT ZION (MO): Francis Houston recently celebrated her 96th birthday.
