From Disaster Relief to Repair & Rebuilding
Our denomination recently sent a monetary gift to Samaritan’s Purse to help those in the northeast who were devastated by Hurricane Sandy. But those who physically traveled to the site were involved in more than just cleaning out debris, removing damaged furniture and appliances, damaged flooring, insulation and Sheetrock. Even those putting tarps on roofs, or cutting up and removing downed tree limbs all had a common goal.
No matter what volunteers were doing to help, they listened to homeowners’ stories and memories as they worked. Beyond the practical assistance, they cultivated relationships with the families – lifting their spirits. “We were able to visit with homeowners and offer a listening ear, a gentle hug, and hope – amid the devastation,” said volunteer Joanna Bond.
More than five months after the storm hit, Samaritan Purse response teams now are transitioning from disaster relief to repair and rebuilding. “This trip wasn’t about the work,” said Theresa Cane. “I tear up just thinking about how unworthy we are of being His hands and feet, and yet He allows us such a grand honor.”
Please continue to pray for the Samaritan’s Purse staff and volunteers as they assist the homeowners in rebuilding; and that their spiritual boldness in spreading the love of Christ with homeowners will be well-received. “Our prayer is that the quality of our work will be the platform for our witness, demonstrating God’s love in the midst of disaster.”
First Presbytery Spring Meeting Highlights
- Formed a committee to study the redrawing of Presbytery line.
- Dissolved the pastoral relationship between Rev. Barry Eller and the Mint Hill Church, effective May 13; and approved Rev. Eller’s retirement.
- Dissolved the pastoral relationship between Rev. Paul Mulner and the Covenant of Grace Church, Winston-Salem, NC, effective May 2; pending congregational approval. Mr. Mulner plans to go into secular work.
- Approved the call to Rev. Morrie Lawing to the Christ Church, Denver, NC.
- Approved the ordination and installation of Mark Brooks as a military chaplain in the U.S. Navy.
- Removed Thomas Henderson from the roll of Students of Theology.
- Received a letter from the session of the Progressive Church, asking the Minister and His Work Committee to work with the Provisional Session of Progressive Church in determining the status of the church.
- Heard addresses from Moderator of Synod Steve Suits; Rev. Frank van Dalen, executive director of World Witness; and Laura Navarro, president of First Presbyterial.
- Approved Hope Chapel, Greensboro, NC, as a church and recommended the call of Todd Jones as minister.
- Heard Shane Floyd had resigned as minister of Emmanuel Church in Wilmington, NC, effective January 31.
- Dissolved the Grace of the Lord Korean Mission, Cary, NC.
- Heard plans for the redevelopment of Durham Mission, formerly Fuller Memorial Church, Durham.
- The summer meeting will be at Pinecrest Church, Flat Rock, NC, June 11 at 10 a.m.
